The United States and Canada might be neighbors, but we are very often at odds on certain kinds of issues. One of the most strongly debated and important issues in the world is health care. Regardless of how you look at it or where you stand in this world, at some point every person is going to get sick and or injured, so medical care is definitely a big deal. Granted that Americans and Canadians are very differently biased when it comes to this debate, so let’s take as unbiased a look as possible at how the whole thing pans out. There is undoubtedly good being done in both countries. Canadians actually seem to like their healthcare system, since polls in 2008 and 2009 show that between 80% and 90% of Canadians like the system as it is. Since there is no need to advertise insurance coverage (since everybody has it through the government), the system is actually administratively simple. The patient rarely has to pay anything out of pocket at the time of service, and costs are actually kept down through the simplicity of buying medicines in bulk, not having to advertise and having less employees doing the same job (as is the case when there are multiple insurance companies). Businesses pay about 30% of the costs of health care (which is getting steadily more expensive in both Canada and the US), and in both countries patients can choose their own doctors and dentists. Dental and vision care is sometimes covered under the government plan, and sometimes not, depending on where you are in Canada. An interesting thing about Canada’s single payer system is that it allows Americans to go there and find their prescription medicines at a discount. Union for International Cancer Control Makes Declaration

It is a near certainty that whoever you are, you know someone who died of cancer or at least someone who has had the disease. Cancer is a problem that comes from a lack of cellular identity: that is, within your body, every cell has a role, whether it is part of your skin, your liver, or another organ. Each cell knows how to function as part of that organ, and how many cells should be in each organ. At the end of its useful life, the internal machinery of the cell tells it when to die and have its raw materials taken back up into the body for re-use, rather than to damage the functioning cells around it. A cancer forms when a cell overrides this order and multiplies without control, taking over body parts that your system needs to function as a unit. This unchecked growth causes incredible pain and suffering which the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) wants to end.

The UICC is a non-profit organization formed in the 1930s that is headquartered in Switzerland. It is a consortium of many organizations in the medical and research fields. They have called on governments around the world to sign a declaration stating that they will take part in a number of targets to reduce the global cancer burden by the year 2020. These targets include:

  • Reducing tobacco use: smoking is a major cause of lung cancer.
  • Reducing obesity: eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise is expected to significantly reduce the global incidence of certain cancers, including that of the colon and kidney.
  • Providing universal vaccinations to those in areas with high Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) as these viruses are linked to cervical and liver cancer, respectively.
  • Decrease the world population’s exposure to environmental and occupational cancer-causing agents.

These and many other goals are very ambitious, but they are a necessary step towards reducing cancer in people throughout the world. Although cancer also has a major genetic component, we must do what we can within the parameters we control.

There have been links made of some environmental hazard with specific diseases from environmental public health professionals.
